I Will Demolish Lekki/Epe Toll Gates if Elected – Jimi Agbaje

Jimi AgbajePeople’s Democratic Party (PDP) Lagos State governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje, has vowed to demolish the Lekki/Epe toll gates if elected.

Agbaje revealed this plan during a peaceful protest, tagged March for freedom, organised by Freedom Group in Lekki, Vanguard reports.

He stated that he would pull down the gates because of what he described as the lack of transparency and sustainability of arrangements for the project. Agbaje also gave his perspective on BRT and light rail projects, stating that they are collapsing.

“I am here to show solidarity with you on the issue of the toll plaza for which you are marching today and assure you that when we get into office, these toll gates will come down; I will demolish all of them.

The public/private partnership, PPP, arrangement behind this project is not transparent. Look at the BRT and Lagos light rail projects, they are collapsing because the PPP arrangements they have on ground are not sustainable.

The light rail which was supposed to have been ready since 2012, is grounded and this is because of vested interests of a few people. The PPP arrangements are skewed to favour only a few people, so for me, I am in solidarity with you and a vote for us is a vote for freedom, a vote to bring down the toll plazas,” he said.

Jimi Agbaje: Gov. Fashola is Lying About my Company Not Paying Taxes

Jim FashPDP Lagos governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje is speaking out about allegations made by Governor Babatunde Fashola about his company attempting to evade taxes.

Agbaje took to Facebook to tell his own side of the matter via a statement:

The Honourable Governor B.R. Fashola (SAN) has lied again and I think it’s time to address his repeated blunder.

With regards to my taxes, there is no truth in this latest piece of misinformation that the Honourable Governor has been peddling. Following the repudiation of his initial allegations about JAYKAY PHARMACEUTICALS unpaid taxes, he has lied again, giving the impression that my company has gone to pay money supposedly owed to the government.

JAYKAY PHARMACEUTICALS has not paid a kobo since the day the Honourable Governor launched his initial attack. We stick to the facts contained in our initial publication, which encapsulated the company’s reaction to the Governor’s initial falsehood. To now insinuate that I have gone behind the curtains to pay N500,000 is clearly political silly season – for lack of a better phrase – and quite frankly, beneath your person.

It’s understandable that we’ve both had our differences in course of this election season, but when the Honorable Governor goes about launching unbridled, flat-out-false attacks at me about something as important as taxes, you leave me no choice but to call you out, Sir.

When I got into this race, I decided to make it about the issues. My opponents? Not so much. They talked about me being inexperienced and at some point they said I was “too old to govern” and we responded with BOLD IDEAS intended to put Lagos on a new trajectory – one that is NOT based on Jagaban’s tax-and-spend economics but on a framework that would radically push us to new economic frontiers for some of the most under-developed regions in the state like Epe and Ikorodu.

They ridiculed our ideas around government-enabled free wifi hotspots across the city – an idea targeted at widening the reach of a world of knowledge that the Internet offers to our young and aspiring populace – especially in areas of low penetration. They called it bold ignorance and out of touch with reality yet they went on to implement wifi Internet-enabled buses a couple of weeks afterwards. As much as we’re glad that our BOLD IDEAS inspire you as much as they do us, one must begin to question the seriousness of the opposition in Lagos to make this election about the issues.

How ever you cut or dissect our success as a state over the last 16-years, the fact is that Lagos in the Economic intelligence Unit (EIU) is still ranked 137th out of 140 cities listed in the liveability index. This means that if you take 140 cities worldwide where people consider good to live in, Lagos is the fourth worst place to live in.

Apart from this, a World Bank survey shows that of the 36 states in Nigeria, Lagos is still the worst state in terms of the ease of securing Building Permits. It is still on record too that the party the Honourable Governor represents has delivered less than 5,000 housing units till date. It is still on record that more students in Lagos fail WAEC than those who pass.

Even when we consider corruption, we are aware that Honourable Governor Fashola is yet to challenge anyone for corruption at the state level. Or is he saying Lagos is 100 percent corruption-free? Yet he goes about castigating the Federal Government. He should walk his talk and lead by example – expose and prosecute high-ranking corrupt officials in his government and the state civil service. The corruption in the Lekki Toll Plaza will be made public in due cause.

Clearly, we still have a lot of work to do as a state but the Honourable Governor Babatunde Fashola has set out to exploit the commanding heights he occupies in the seat of government to bully us. And quite frankly, we shall stand up to bullies.

I think what Lagosians should begin to ask is what is driving the Honourable Governor Fashola’s violent outbursts? What has he got to hide? Other than lay the facts bare to enable the public form an informed opinion.

I refuse to be baited into his self-declared verbal warfare. My politics and campaign will be issues-based and no roforofo badmouthing from anyone, no matter how highly placed, will steer me away from development-based politicking.

There are more pressing issues, more important conversations to have and more problems to solve and the people of Lagos are wondering if their leaders get it. The teachers, the students, the blacksmiths, the bankers, the taxi-man, the small-business owners, they all hope that their leaders understand that the outcome of this election and the future of this state is bigger than any one personality or party. Whatever we do or commit to doing determines whether they have food to put on their tables; whether they can own homes, pay salaries or that their children get to attend schools of their choice. They deserve better.

The people definitely deserve better.

An Amazing Night of Praise & Worship: Watch the Highlights of #TheExperience 13

The 13th edition of the annual The Experience concert at the Tafawa Balewa Square, in the heart of Lagos Island, was just as amazing as the previous 12 editions, Christians from all over Nigeria coming together for a massive night of praise and worship.

Those unable to watch live from TBS also got the opportunity to watch a livestream on DSTV channel 198 and YouTube. The official hashtags #TheExperience13 and #TE13 also trended on social media, attendees sharing their worship live with people unable to watch.

Missed it? You can watch live recordings here. We’ve also compiled the highlights of the night. Check them out:

Pastor Paul Adefarasin demanding good leadership in Nigeria

Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the convener of The Experience event, did what pastors rarely do in this part of the world: call out politicians for their lacklustre leadership.

Although a lot of politicians were seated in the audience, including the Lagos State governorship candidates for the 2019 elections Jimi Agabaje and Babajide Sanwo-olu, the pastor, introduced to the stage by his wife, Ifeanyi Adefarasin, asked that Nigerians demand better leadership from their leader. He dropped lines like: “We value thieves instead of prosecuting them,” “When you go to the polling booths, vote for your values.” See what social media users had to say:

Tope Alabi

Watching Tope Alabi’s praise session is always an experience. The way she manipulates the Yoruba language, creating new words to praise God is awe-inspiring. Even social media users had to testify that watching her perform moved their souls. And it didn’t hurt that her gele was 100!

Tim Godfrey

The “Nara” singer opened the show last night, and, of course, it was a grand opening, with a marching band and a group of dancers. And even better was that later in the night, he joined Travis Greene on stage to perform “Nara” with him. See what everyone had to say:

Timi Dakolo

People had asked why Timi Dakolo was performing in The Experience 13 when he isn’t a gospel singer, and his performance was sufficient as an answer.

The singer gave a patriotic performance, complete with repelled colonisers and a multitude of Nigerian tribes and the Nigerian flag. He performed a song titled “Great Nation,” which so many have said needs to be our new National Anthem, the song is that powerful.

Chioma Jesus

Every year, Chioma Jesus comes along to blow our minds with her worship songs and the fast-paced style of the unique “Aba” sound, Chioma Jesus’ ministration was loved by everyone. Her headgear, too, was beautiful.

Countdown to the 2012 Future Awards: The Complete List of Shortlisted Nominees – D’banj, Ini Edo, Banky W, Toolz & Ugonna Omeruo Make the Cut

The countdown to the 7th edition of The Future Awards set to take place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State from Saturday 25th August 2012 – Sunday 26th August 2012, is officially on!

The Central Working Committee for The Future Awards has unveiled the shortlist of 5 individuals for each category for the award show. Speaking on the award, the executive director of The Future Project, Chude Jideonwo said “It’s as usual, been an intense 8 weeks. After the nominations, there was the process of administering nomination forms, where we also interviewed the nominees, secured references, conducted independent research and held random inspections of books, finances and more. We also got evidence of all the nominees’ ages and had a two-week period for any complaints from the public. Simultaneous with voting, the Board of Judges – 30 young media influencers from across the country – sat for a full day and produced the shortlist, which goes to the Independent Audit Committee. The names will then return to the Board of Judges who will choose the final winners.”

Speaking more on the shortlisted nominees, he said, “Sadly, many nominees did not fill their forms, perhaps assuming – despite emphasis to the contrary – that voting alone would progress them to the next stage. Many of those nominees, without publicly verifiable information, lost out when they got to the judges table. The awards insist on the highest standards of transparency and while the process can be tedious and time-consuming for the nominees, it is an ultimately rewarding exercise and crucial to choose the very best.”

Members of the Independent Audit Committee include TV host Mo Abudu, external relations director of the Nigeria LNG, Siene Alwell-Brown, politician Jimi Agbaje, Stanbic IBTC director Yemi Osindero, LEAP Africa founder Ndidi Nwuneli and many more.

All the finalists and winners of each category will be unveiled at The Future Awards 2012 this weekend. Chairman of Heirs Holdings and the Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu has been announced as the keynote speaker.

You can watch the award show live on Sunday 26th August 2012 by 2 PM on www.YNaija.com/TheFutureAwards

With excitement building up to The Future Awards Africa 2013, the Central Working Committee (CWC) has unveiled the shortlist of three nominees per category for the Awards scheduled to take place soon.

It has been an intense period of judging and review,” says Chude Jideonwo, Executive Director of The Future Project. “After the nominations, there was a period of intense research and verification of nominees before the final selection process, thanks to the Independent Audit Committee and the Board of Judges.  They worked tirelessly over two months and are thoroughly proud of the resulting final nominees.”

Members of the Independent Audit Committee include the chief executive of EbonyLife TV, Mo Abudu; politician Jimi Agbaje; Stanbic IBTC director Yemi Osindero; and LEAP Africa founder Ndidi Nwuneli amongst others.

All the nominees deserve to win and we are immensely inspired by them,” Jideonwo noted. “However, the vetting process has been daunting, and the intense scrutiny that successful nominees have gone through has been illuminating for them as well. We stressed the importance of a combination of structure, quantifiable measures of success and impact, to get the most inspiring and worthy to rise to the top.”

The awards, presented in partnership with the African Union Commission, the Tony Elumelu Foundation and Microsoft, will mark the end of a three-city, week-long celebration of the Africa Union at 50 and Nigeria at 100 starting with the induction of 100 ‘Guardians of the Future’ by President Goodluck Jonathan. The Awards will be televised exclusively for Africa Magic.

Grace Amah: There are No Rules saying I Must Marry Before Having a Child

Grace Amah - August 2014 - BellaNaija.com 01
For Grace Amah, it is different strokes for different folks.

A few years ago, it was announced that the Nollywood actress welcomed a baby boy. She kept the identity of her son’s father a mystery and that made the media zoom in on her personal life.

In an interview with Encomium Weekly, she talks about her son, being away from the movie scene and why she is unperturbed by the critics who find it unideal that she has a child without a ring on her finger.

Read excerpts;
On endorsing Jimi Agbaje as the next governor of Lagos state: (She is part of 4NL – For New Lagos) “We are not politicians. We came together for change.  We need new things in Lagos, education, politics, general things. It is for a new Nigeria, we only started in Lagos. This is where we earn our living at the time we will reach other places. For Jimi Agbaje? Yes, we are endorsing him.”

On being away from the movie scene: “I have been abroad. I travelled out to have my baby. I came back a long time ago and when I came back, I had to give my son enough time. It’s not all about having a baby, it’s about giving that baby your time to grow, bring him up in a good way.”

Grace Amah - August 2014 - BellaNaija.com 02
On the controversy that she didn’t get married before having a child: “It is nobody’s business. It’s my life.”

On if having a child out of wedlock is a mistake: “I don’t know what you call a mistake. Who says I must be married before having a baby? Why is it an issue? And there is no compulsion for me to come to the world and announce who the father of my child is. It is about my life.”

On when she will tie the knot: “When the time comes, I will surely get married.”

On her concerned fans: “Yes, I agree but it shouldn’t be something I am mandated to do.”

On possible suitors: “There are many. I am a beautiful girl. The father of my son is the most qualified enough.”

To read the rest of the interview, pick up the new issue of Encomium Weekly.

GAME 2014 - Bellanaija - November 2014

The 2014 edition of the Goal Attainment Made Easy (GAME) Conference, an initiative of iamCHAMP Limited, a Nigerian based Human Capital Development firm in partnership with Department for International Development (DFID), has been slated to start from Thursday 20th November 2014. This was announced on Thursday 6th November 2014 held at the British Government’s Department For International Development office in Lagos.

While addressing newsmen at the event, the Pro-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University and Chief Host of the GAME 2014 Conference, Dr. Christopher Kolade hinted that time to take initiative to make Nigeria great is now, as no situation in the world changes itself. He commended the initiative, stating that the responsibility to make Nigeria great lies with the younger generation who constitute over 80 percent of the country’s population.

We need your initiative and spiritual link with God to get this country from where it is, to where it ought to be. The transformation agenda should not just be about Mr. President, but it should be a collective responsibility of all Nigerians“. He said Speaking at the event.

The Convener of The GAME 2014 Conference, Abiola Salami explained the motivation behind the conference. According to him, “the pressure to meet up with targets, deadlines and their key performance indicators (KPI), the need to engage in continuous professional development, build and maintain career advancing networks and in some instances, decision making for career transitions have led to incidences of having professionals that are very successful in their careers while other aspects of their being are lagging behind.”

To guarantee progressive productivity of young professionals, there is need to create a platform that will foster knowledge importation, skills acquisition and opportunity maximization through the five areas of well-being. This is the reason we came up with the idea of this at a media conference“.

Targeted at young professionals, the Goal Attainment Made Easy (GAME) Conference which started in 2012 with less than 30 participants has over the years grown rapidly, pulling over 300 participants in 2013, and expecting to get more at this year’s edition and General conference to provide young professionals with the needed skills for personal and collective.

In a short remark, The Regional Director, Department For International Development, (DFID), Adesina Fagbenro-Byron, while commending the initiative of the GAME Conference, stated that the time to act upon our many challenges is now, so as to stop recycling the country’s problems as it is This year’s edition of the conference which is centered on total well-being draws eminent speakers from different walks of life among whom are Foluso Phillips, Herbert Wigwe, Jimi Agbaje, Dr. Mo Abudu, Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr. Christopher Kolade.

The conference also hosts two award ceremonies to honor women and men making difference in their chosen careers across various sectors of the economy. Protests as Jimi Agbaje Wins PDP Gubernatorial Ticket for Lagos

Jimi Agbaje was on Monday night declared the winner of the Lagos PDP governorship primaries in Lagos amid protests.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protests followed a difference in the number of delegates that voted and the number of votes cast.

The Chairman of the PDP Governorship Committee for Lagos State, Senator Umar Kumo, announced 863 as the number of votes cast as against 806 delegates that voted, sparking protests.

Attempts by some of the supporters of the other aspirants to stop the vote count and cancel the primaries were, however, unsuccessful.

Senator Musliu Obanikoro, an aspirant, walked out of the venue when the committee was unable to explain the difference in numbers.

Announcing Agbaje as the winner, Kumo said he had 432 votes to clinch the ticket, while Obanikoro had 343 votes.

NAN reports that the only female aspirant in the contest, Modupe Chukwuneke stepped down shortly before the voting started.

Among the other aspirants, Adedeji Doherty got 21 votes, Tokumboh Kamson had 46 and Babatunde Gbadamosi, 21 votes.

Speaking with newsmen, Agbaje promised to carry all the aspirants along.

He also commended the committee over the conduct of the elections.

However, Obanikoro told newsmen later that he would appeal the outcome of the election, which he described as a sham.

He said that the difference in the number of delegates and the votes cast must be explained.

The aspirant alleged that the result was predetermined and called for its cancellation.

Gbadamosi, another aspirant, also said the election was a sham.
